Lorraine Elliott has been blogging full-time since 2009. That’s early in any one’s books to be a full-time blogger! Most of Australia didn’t even know that blogging existed in 2009! Lorraine’s blog Not Quite Nigella is a food heaven. It’s full of her food adventures, both at restaurants and at home, and there’s a little bit of travel thrown in too! The combination is a fabulous mix sure to please the food enthusiast, or the foodie-wannabe (like me)!
In 2013 Lorraine had her memoir, also called Not Quite Nigella published and yes, Nigella Lawson has visited Not Quite Nigella and loves the name!
With all her experience, I knew Lorraine would be the perfect person to interview for the blog so we can all learn a little something from her experience. To my delight she agreed! So, here is my Lorraine Elliott Blogger Interview.
Tell us a little about you:
I’m a slightly eccentric cake and food lover that just happens to blog about my obsessions on Not Quite Nigella. I love eating out as much as I love cooking and I love sharing both with my readers. I’ve been blogging for over seven years now and I still remember when people didn’t even know what a blog was! Oh and my favourite holiday is Halloween because then I get to do all sorts of gruesome things whereas the rest of the year is all about pretty.
What is on your desk right now?
Well it is very messy I’m afraid! There is a lot of paper, two cameras, a drink bottle, a cup of tea, a cup of water, lots of pens and a packet of Bertie Botts Jelly beans. I’m reluctant to finish them because some of the flavours are as promised, quite questionable!
Describe your perfect Sunday:
It would definitely start with a sleep in. Then a picnic in the park with friends or family and then dinner out. Then because it is a Sunday, I’d crawl into bed early and watch TV in bed.
You just can’t live without:
How did you begin Blogging/ your career?
By accident really! I was working in the corporate world and not particularly satisfied with my life although to be honest I didn’t really know it at the time. I thought that working insane hours for insane people was just what you did to earn money! Little did I know that there is another world out there…
What resources/apps/gadgets do you find essential to your blogging process?
Lots of cameras, a smart phone, computers and quiet time. The last one allows me to power through work whereas if I were in an office I’d be really distracted by lots of things all the time.
What twists and turns have you faced in your blogging/ life and how have you dealt with them?
It’s mostly the human element that has flummoxed me at times but all I can say is to act with grace and where possible, extricate yourself from any position that doesn’t suit you.
What do you gain from blogging?
A new life. I’m not being overly dramatic I promise. To be able to do what I love is something I’m really so grateful for.
Where do you go online when you need a break from blogging?
I go offline! No, really, I need to go offline to get a proper break. I find the best thing is to watch movies or television, something escapist or a good documentary always puts things into perspective.
What advice would you give to someone who is new to blogging?
Stick with it and always be true to yourself. You’ll end up learning a whole bunch of new skills that you never thought that you would and you’ll hopefully have a lot of fun on the way too.
How amazing are those images!? mmmm if only someone could invent computers like the TV in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory where we could just reach in and grab some of that deliciousness… Sorry, got side-tracked for a moment.
There’s some great advice there, thanks Lorraine! I totally agree, Blogging really can give you a new life!
